H型鋼能夠使建筑結構重量降低35%左右；又因其腿部內外側呈平行狀，腿端部呈直角，拼裝組合成構件效率很高，可節約焊接，鉚接工作量達20%左右。常用于要求承載能力大，截面穩定性能好的大型橋梁、建筑等。H型鋼兩橫的板平面呈平板狀，厚度是相同的，而工字鋼的板平面是由根部向邊上逐漸變化的，所以有一定角度，這是區分它們的主要手段。此外，工字鋼的型號是用其腰高厘米數的阿拉伯數字來表示，遇到同腰高的型號在后面加a、b、c加于辨別，如：15C、25b、40a，前兩個的腰高為15cm跟25cm，而翼緣厚度、腹板以及翼緣寬度則是不同的。
